Ci si trova sempre a dovere ma in fondo anche a volere (ri)definire e (ri)dire cosa si può intendere per testo installativo.
Un testo che non chieda necessariamente una lettura lineare. Un testo in cui l’impatto visivo configura già un oggetto estetico verso cui il lettore può dirigere uno sguardo non necessariamente analitico, geometrizzante, decrittante. Un testo che può indurre analisi e esplorazione minuta e che tuttavia persuade anche prima che questa si compia. Eccetera.
Più delle parole valgono gli esempi. Varie volte ho fatto quello de Il dramma della vita, di Valère Novarina, tradotto da Andrea Raos e uscito prima in Nazione indiana e poi in gammm. Qui il testo perfettamente leggibile eccede — per accumulo e ossessione elencativa felicissima quanto spiazzante e sfiancante — le possibilità e qualsiasi buona volontà di un classico ‘lettore lineare’, di ogni lettura sequenziale.
Un altro esempio potrebbe essere l’anonimo Abacuz pubblicato in marzo su http://hotelstendhal.blogsome.com: clic su http://www.box.net/shared/ohduc7zh3q. Ovviamente il dato installativo-visivo è totalizzante, in questo caso. E, prima ancora, spicca in primo piano (escludendo altri piani) il fatto che il meccanismo in gioco sia puramente ottico, ininterpretabile: accumulo da vedere, installazione senza alternative.

Xerolage 43—Matina L. Stamatakis
Grapyrus
Matina Stamatakis has "arrived" even if the rest of the world has been too slow to realize it. Her newest "art/non" textscape is a veritable plum pudding of ruthless extravagance, a cryptological scherzo written in "sanscript", so to speak. Teasing out texture from text, this most recent offering from the Xerolage series has a haunting aspect that unites papyri and the phantom after-effects of words in constant stochastic exile. In essence, Stamatakis "writes" perpetually double, the reflection upon a surface of "lin/geist" that judders with an ekphrastic motion of the cinematic or photographic double-take.

Tombstones and footprints, prehistoric imperial Chinese silk distressed and preserved in airtight tombs, Sapphic papyrus scrolls used as winding sheets for the human dead: languaged shapes (letters, glyphs, cuneiform, runes) layer each other on multidimensional, neonic, poly-textural surfaces that glow through the eras, aeons and ages. Making art is hard. The empty page or canvas seems limitless and glorious, one of the few places where anything can happen. But the moment a word is written or a mark made, what can happen is suddenly—violently—limited.
In the larger world of art, every art movement is a theory of how to get free—how to get free of the influence of earlier artists, how to get free of public expectation, and how to get free of the limitations of what one has already done. In the insular world of this Catalogue, each of our art movements likewise describes how a drawing tried to transcend itself. The following work is an example of what can happen within, or as a result of, narrow constraints. Each drawing was created using a strict set of rules: they were collaboratively drawn with the same pens, using a postcard-sized rectangle as a starting point. The box is the first limitation, the other person’s contribution another.
Within this insular process, the subtitles, deviations, and variations took on particular import. A Catalogue of Rare Movements depicts twenty-four art movements that flourished and flared out in this tight space of possibility. Xerolage 42- Monica McFawn & Curtis A. RhodesEach drawing itself became a theory of art, rising up and burning out within the course of its creation. But by the time each art movement was identified, it was already obsolete, and only another drawing could get us free of it.

L’Ulisse di James Joyce racconta il 16 giugno 1904 a Dublino, con i viaggi paralleli di un giovane Telemaco, il letterato Stephen Dedalus (si pronuncia “Stiven Dedalus”!), e di un Ulisse di mezza età, l’agente pubblicitario Leopold Bloom, tradito dalla moglie cantante, la sensuale Molly. Tutto il mondo festeggia il 16 giugno, Giorno di Bloom, con letture e spettacoli ispirati all’Ulisse joyciano, ma solo a Genova si dà lettura integrale di tutto il capolavoro joyciano, dall’alba alle ore piccole.
Dopo i successi del 2006-2008, il Festival Internazionale di Poesia di Genova 2009 ripropone l’appuntamento con le peregrinazioni di Bloom e amici in spazi analoghi a quelli in cui si svolgono i diciotto capitoli, dalla Torre sul mare in cui Stephen fa colazione con amici goliardi, alla scuola dove insegna, ai numerosi pub dove Bloom viene tentato dalle Sirene (le bariste) o attaccato perché ebreo da un Ciclope nazionalista, alla camera da letto in cui Penelope-Molly pronuncia il celebre soliloquio conclusivo.
Come nelle precedenti edizioni, nella lettura si alterneranno studenti, scrittori, attori, lettori, studiosi, appassionati, esibizionisti….

In Protracted Type, Nico Vassilakis provides us with a stunning and extensive survey of the impressive variety of his visual and conceptual work with language over the past several years. The book is punctuated with thoughtful statements about the nature of creating that work, of “finding your aleatoric self among the pencils”; i.e., coming to grips with the paradox of working subconsciously with language which is generally experienced as a conscious medium. In one of his statements he describes his creative process as a kind of disassociation: “I let my brain do the thinking. I watch it think for me…it makes the associations…maybe my brain thinks I’m staring and is piecing the puzzle together for me.” This is an excellent description of the creative process at its best.
Vassilakis has explored the possibilities of visual poetry from the outer limits of the purely letteral to the purely graphic, and the results are consistently stimulating and resonant: from enlarged and manipulated photos of typewriter keys and printed letters, to collaged cut-ups, to glyphic drawings, to concrete poetry, to photocopier artifacts, Vassilakis has given us a tour-de-force of styles and approaches. This is an essential work, and would be a bargain at three times the price.

A tour de force through visual poetry, Protracted Type is a place where, according to the author, "letters are vulnerable and cant always stand on their own." He sees this series of black and white visual poems–and these poems are seen, composed, more than they are written–particulates, letters, phrases, fields of words before and after they construct their meaning, some sharp, some fuzzy, some slipping over the edge. At the center point of the glass, where inside and outside are indivisible, these poems fuse, the Captain’s eyes seizing–seized by–the world he perceives. This four-day workshop will begin by examining and rehearsing various techniques central to Conceptualist poetics, broadly considered so as to encompass appropriation, transcription, and other versions of what Kenneth Goldsmith has called “uncreative writing,” as well as the deliberately awkward and expressively debased gestures associated with Flarf. We will then look at these techniques in relation to older and more traditional notions of craft: can there be coherent criteria for craft-based evaluation of texts written using blankly conceptual or intentionally “bad” methods? Do any of the familiar aesthetic categories still apply, and if so, how?

K. Silem Mohammad is the author of three books of poetry: Breathalyzer (Edge Books, 2008), A Thousand Devils (Combo Books, 2004), and Deer Head Nation (Tougher Disguises, 2003). His work has been featured in numerous journals and anthologies, including The Best American Poetry 2004, Bay Poetics, and A Best of Fence, as well as the forthcoming Flarf: An Anthology of Flarf, which he is co-editing with Sharon Mesmer, Nada Gordon, and Gary Sullivan. With Anne Boyer, he edits the poetry magazine "Abraham Lincoln". He is Associate Professor of English and Writing at Southern Oregon University in Ashland.

Con Suburra Giulio Marzaioli presenta al lettore un’opera sonnambolica, esposta al rischio della vertigine: si attraversa un antico quartiere di Roma, e al tempo stesso si ripercorre una storia personale, presente solo per accenni, per accenti. Vita del tempo e tempo del soggetto: lunga durata dello spazio urbano e durata istantanea dell’esperienza, di cui l’individuo può diventare preda indifesa. È nello specchio della ruggine che si scioglie il senso di questo incrocio tra i tempi, come rivelano le fulminee sequenze di apertura e chiusura: tra «il piede | che batte | nel sonno» e quell’«ossido » che «è aria | che resta | e dice | di sé | che esiste». Alla verticale aerea di Suburra segue l’orizzontalità ctonia di Ipogei. Alla superficie si contrappone la profondità, ai versi il testo detto in prosa, alla singolarità di una voce che si trova còlta innanzi alla propria storia risponde la pluralità di una vicenda condivisa ma vuota: una sola moltitudine che ricicla il proprio parlato, impastandosi nei cliché del quotidiano, di una comunicazione spenta, che pure ci lascia, ancora una volta, presi sopra al bordo, nell’attimo, lì dove, ancora una volta, ci dimostriamo incapaci di decidere” ]

I had planned on Fluxhibition #3 being in 2010 HOWEVER a venue become available for this summer. There is a current Collage Museum call out for an exhibition entitled Thinking Inside of the Box - A Survey of Box Assemblage Art see: (http://collagemuseum.com/thinking-box-call-for-works.html) Deadline May 15th ( PARTICIPATE IN THIS ONE TOO!).
I thought that, since I was able to secure the university venue, it would be great to invite my fluxfriends to contribute a fluxbox for Fluxhibition #3 and later I will combine the two bodies of box works for an additional exhibit later in 2009 or in 2010. So your Fluxbox contribution will get at least double exposure.

INTERNATIONAL FLUXHIBITION #3 - Fluxus Boxes, Cases, Kits and Containers by Contemporary Fluxus Artists
Call for Works - Deadline: June 30th, 2009 (sooner if possible) No Jury, all works accepted.
Fluxhibition #3 will consist of Fluxus Boxes, Kits, Cases and Containers and/or Fluxus Objects (to be placed in containers or boxes by the museum staff for the exhibit). An exhibition will be held in July at The University of Texas at Arlington, Texas. Works contributed will become part of the permanent collection of the FluxMuseum (fluxmuseum.org) and will be used for additional future exhibitions. A catalog will be produced for the show and available for purchase after the exhibit. Additionally, images of all works will become a permanent exhibit on the FluxMuseum web site.
What to do:
1) Create a Fluxus box, case, kit or container - use classic themes or come up with something new.
2) Send Fluxboxes, Fluxcases, Fluxcontainers and/or Fluxobjects by June 30th, 2009
3) Come to the show if you can
4) if so inclined, write or contribute a related essay for the catalog
5) When available, buy a catalog of the show.

mail art and fluxus have been closely connected for over 40 years. as a celebration and exploration of the continuing vitality of both practices we are planning a mail art exhibit entitled FLUXUS NOW!
please send visual poems, soundworks, fluxus boxes, event scores, objects, images, books, booklets, TLPs, broadsides, manifestos, videos, and any other fluxus materials you find and/or create. critiques of this proposal are also welcome and will be included in the exhibit.
the exhibit will be presented as a part of the 2010 roanoke marginal arts festival.
dates for the festival are february 11 - 16, 2010.
the deadline for submissions is february 1, 2010.

Paul Vangelisti è autore di circa venti libri di poesia, e attivo traduttore dall’italiano. La sua raccolta più recente, Days Shadows Pass, è uscita nel 2007 per Green Integer. Tra i premi e riconoscimenti ottenuti c’è il National Endowment for the Arts Translation (1981), "Poetry" fellowships (1988); il Premio Flaiano in Italia e — negli USA — il Pen Prize per la traduzione (2006).
Tra 1971 e 1982 è stato co-redattore, con John McBride, della rivista letteraria "Invisible City" e, nel 1993-2002, della pubblicazione annuale del College of Neglected Science. E’ il fondatore e direttore del Graduate Writing program dell’Otis College of Art and Design. Dirige inoltre la rivista semestrale di letteratura "OR" (progetto legato al writing program).
